Abbott Elementary

Abbott Elementary, what’s it about? In this workplace comedy, a group of dedicated, passionate teachers—and a slightly tone-deaf principal—are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life.

Though these incredible public servants may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.

A documentary crew is recording the lives of teachers working in underfunded schools. One of the places they have decided to document is Philadelphia’s Willard R. Abbott Elementary School, a predominantly Black Philadelphia public school.

Conditions at the school are harsh, and most teachers do not last more than two years. Second-grade teacher Janine Teagues and history teacher Jacob Hill are two of three teachers in a group of twenty to make it past one year. They work with experienced kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, tone-deaf school principal Ava Coleman, and recent substitute hire Gregory Eddie.

“Abbott Elementary” stars Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard.

Quinta Brunson serves as writer and executive producer alongside Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker of Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios. The pilot episode is written by Quinta Brunson and directed by Randall Einhorn.

The tv show premiered as a midseason entry in the 2021–22 television season on December 7, 2021, and was met with critical acclaim. The first season consisted of 13 episodes. In March 2022, the series was renewed for a 22-episode second season, which premiered on September 21, 2022.

The tv show was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, with Brunson, James, Ralph, and Williams all receiving nominations for their performances. The show won three Emmys for its first season, including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Ralph and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Brunson.
